Get Full Thinset Coverage by Combing the Trowel Lines One Direction

The Problem

Industry standard calls for a minimum of 95% of each tile's back to be in contact with mortar. Swirling the thinset on in arcs — common because it's fast — traps air inside the closed loops of the swirl. When the tile is pressed down, that air has nowhere to go, and coverage can fall to 70–80%. Under large-format tile especially, those voids are where cracks start and where tiles debond.

The Technique

  1. Spread the thinset, then comb it with the notched trowel in straight, parallel lines — every pass running the same direction.
  2. Set the tile and press it down across the ridge lines. Each ridge collapses into the valley beside it, and the air shoots out the open ends of the lines.
  3. Pull a tile up occasionally and look at the back. You're checking for near-full mortar contact; a swirled bed shows dry patches where the trapped air sat.

The creator demonstrates the difference on camera: a scrap tile with clear film on the back, dropped onto swirled mortar, comes up showing large air pockets. The same test on directionally combed mortar shows close to 100% contact.

Pro tip: Trowel ridges are a venting system, not just a way to meter out mortar. Combing them straight and parallel is what gives the air an exit path — the notch size sets how much mortar you leave behind, the direction sets whether the air can leave.
