Set the Load on a Rubber Pad So You Can Still Pass the Strap Underneath

The Problem

A strap that cinches — passed under the load, back over, and through itself — holds a bundle of timber far better than one thrown straight over the top. The catch is the first move. Once four lengths of 4x4 are lying flat on a trailer bed, there is no gap under them, and threading a strap under a loaded bundle means unloading it again.

The cinch has to be set up before the load goes on, which puts the decision at the one point in the job where you're thinking about lifting rather than tying.

The Technique

Put something under the load that leaves a gap.

  1. Lay a strip of rubber anti-slip matting across the bed where each strap will sit, running it out past both sides of where the load will land.
  2. Stack the load on top of the matting. The mat's thickness holds the timber up off the bed by enough to get a strap end through.
  3. Feed the strap under the load through that gap, then bring it back over the top.
  4. Hook it under the section coming up from below and throw it back over, so the strap wraps around itself and closes a loop right around the bundle.
  5. Do the same again from the other side, so the second cinch pulls opposite to the first. One cinch squeezes the bundle in one direction; two opposed cinches leave it nowhere to go.
  6. Hook the free ends and ratchet down.
Pro tip: Webbing wrapped around itself loses rated capacity at the crossing — the bend concentrates load on the outer fibres and the two layers abrade each other under road vibration. European commenters on this video point at VDI 2700 and say the wrap isn't compliant load securing at all. Take the strength loss as read: derate the strap in your head, inspect the webbing at the wrap after every trip, and if you're hauling commercially, check what your jurisdiction actually requires before adopting it.
Pro tip: The matting isn't only a spacer. Rubber against timber and rubber against the bed roughly doubles the friction compared to bare steel or a painted deck, which is what stops the bundle sliding forward under braking — the reason it's standard kit in commercial load securing rather than a trick.
Safety note: Load securement is a legal duty, and the consequences of getting it wrong land on people behind you. Match strap ratings to the load weight, protect webbing wherever it crosses a sharp edge or a cut end, and re-check tension a few miles in — a bundle settles and a strap that was tight in the yard goes slack on the road.
