Clamp a Speed Square for One-Person Tape Measuring

The Problem

Measuring alone means the dumb end of the tape has no one holding it. The hook slips off the far edge mid-pull, and if you're measuring from a point in the middle of a panel or a wall, there's no edge to hook at all — so you end up walking back and forth to check, or burning a mark and measuring from that with the math error risk it brings.

The Technique

1. Set a speed square with its fence exactly where you want to measure from.
2. Clamp it down.
3. Hook the tape on the square and pull your measurement. The square's fence stands proud of the surface, so the hook catches a solid edge that can't slip while you stretch the tape and mark.

When you're done, unclamp and move the square to the next reference point. It turns any spot you can reach with a clamp into a hookable edge.
