Fix Router Tear-Out With a Controlled Climb Cut, Without Losing Control of the Bit

The Problem

Router bits spin clockwise, and running the router left to right with the bit between you and the workpiece feeds the cutter against its own rotation — the setup that gives you the most control. Run it the other direction and the spinning bit is now grabbing the wood and pulling itself (and your hands) along with it, which is what "climb cutting" means and why it's the standard rule to avoid.

But tear-out doesn't respect that rule. Once the first light pass has already splintered the edge of the grain, taking smaller and smaller normal passes doesn't undo the damage — the tear-out is already there, and every pass after it is cutting around a torn edge instead of a clean one.

The Technique

  1. Run your cuts normally — bit feeding against its rotation — taking light passes toward final depth.
  2. If a pass tears out the edge, switch to a climb cut to create a clean scoring line before continuing: run the bit backward, against the direction you'd normally feed it, taking no more than a 1/16-inch-deep pass.
  3. With that clean scored edge established, go back to normal-direction passes to work down to full depth — the score keeps the grain from tearing further as the rest of the material comes away.
  4. Alternatively, reserve a climb cut for the very last pass instead of the first: take the cut down to within 1/16 to 1/32 inch of final depth normally, then make that last sliver of material a climb cut. A climb-cut final pass often leaves a cleaner edge than finishing with a normal pass.
  5. Whichever way you use it, keep the router moving at a steady, controlled pace. A climb cut wants to run away with you — if you let the bit go fast, you get fewer cuts per inch of travel and a rougher edge, on top of the control risk.
Safety note: A climb cut is dangerous specifically because the bit can pull the router (or a handheld piece, on a router table) out of your control — this is the rule woodworkers are taught to avoid for a reason. Keep passes to a 16th of an inch or less, keep both hands on the router with a firm grip, and never climb-cut with a large-diameter bit or a deep pass. If you're not confident you can hold the tool through an unexpected pull, don't attempt it.
