Make a Slide-and-Lock Rope Hanger With a Prusik Hitch

The Problem

Hang something from a rope with an ordinary knot and it hangs there — at that spot, at that height, until you untie it. For a work light over a project, a kettle over a camp fire, or a bag on a ridge line, what you actually want is a connection you can slide anywhere by hand that stays put the instant weight comes on.

The Technique

That's the prusik hitch — a climber's friction knot doing utility work:

  1. Take a smaller-diameter cord and wrap it around the taut standing rope, passing it through itself — a girth hitch to start.
  2. Feed it through two or three more times, keeping the wraps neat and side by side, then dress them snug.
  3. Hang your load from the tail. Under load, the wraps grip the standing line and lock in place.
  4. To move it, take the weight off and slide the whole hitch by hand — it glides, then locks again wherever the load returns.

This creator ties it end-line — building the prusik with the free end of the cord rather than a pre-tied loop, which is the fiddly part worth copying from the video. The demo is a teapot hanger that repositions in any direction with a push.

Pro tip: A prusik only grips when its cord is meaningfully thinner than the rope it rides on — same-diameter cord slips. More wraps grip harder on slick rope.
