Stop Chisel Tear-Out: Give the Fibers Somewhere to Push Against

The Problem

You pare a chamfer or chop toward an edge, and the last bit of wood doesn't cut — it breaks, taking a ragged chunk of your workpiece with it. That's tear-out, and it always happens at the same place: the far side of the cut, where the fibers have nothing behind them. Unsupported fibers don't shear cleanly under the chisel; they give way and split ahead of it.

The Techniques

Both fixes are the same idea — support the fibers at the exit.

Work in from both sides

For a chamfer, don't run straight through from one side. Pop the corner lightly from one side first, then come around and work from the other. The first cut leaves a small shoulder, and when your main cut arrives at it, the fibers are backed by that shoulder instead of by open air — the chisel shears them off cleanly with no damage at all.

Clamp a backer block

Alternatively, clamp a scrap block tight against the back of the workpiece, with no gap between the block and the wood where the chisel will exit. Cut your chamfer and let the chisel stop against the block. The fibers can't give way because the backer is holding them from behind — the cut exits clean with no tear-out whatsoever.

Pro tip: "No gap" is the operative phrase on the backer block — a block clamped even a paper's thickness away lets the fibers flex into the space and split anyway. And the principle travels: it's the same reason a zero-clearance insert stops tear-out at the table saw and a scrap board behind a drill exit stops blowout. Support the exit, and the exit stays clean.
