Gauge Electrical Box Stickout With the Side of Your Lineman's Pliers
Technique: Pliers as a Box-Depth Gauge
The Problem
An electrical box mounted during rough-in has to stick out past the stud face by exactly the thickness of the drywall that's coming — flush with the finished wall, not buried behind it or proud of it. Eyeballing it works until it doesn't, and a box set wrong means spacers or a mud ring fix later.
The Technique
An electrician's no-extra-tool gauge: the head of a lineman's pliers is 5/8 of an inch thick — the same as 5/8 drywall.
- Hold the pliers flat against the stud face beside the box location.
- Set the box so its front edge lands flush with the face of the pliers head.
- Fasten the box. When the 5/8 board goes on, the box lands exactly flush.
The pliers are already in your hand for the rest of the rough-in, which is the whole charm — the depth gauge is the tool you were holding anyway.
Pro tip: Head thickness isn't a published spec — check your own pliers against a tape once before trusting them as a gauge, and remember the trick calibrates to 5/8 board. For 1/2-inch drywall, most side-mount boxes have molded depth ribs on the side that mark common stickouts; use those instead.
