Roof a Pergola With Clear Corrugated PVC — and Loose Bamboo for the Looks

The Problem

An open pergola is a sunshade that quits the moment it rains — and everything under it, cushions included, lives at the mercy of weather and birds. Solid roofing fixes that and kills the light, which was the reason for a pergola instead of a room.

The Main Idea

The combination that gets both:

1. Clear corrugated PVC sheets across the top of the pergola as the weather layer. Rain sheds, furniture stays dry, bird droppings land on plastic instead of cushions — and the clear sheets pass light through.
2. Bamboo canes laid underneath the PVC as the visible layer. From below you see bamboo, not corrugated plastic.
3. The detail that makes it work: don't pack the bamboo tight. Deliberate gaps between canes let sunlight filter through, so the space underneath reads dappled-bright instead of roofed-over.
