Why Houses Are Framed With Nails, Not Screws

The Problem

Screws grip harder than nails, cost more, and feel like the premium fastener — so it surprises people that every framed house is assembled with nails. Swapping screws into framing connections actually makes the structure more brittle.

The Main Idea

Framing connections are loaded in shear: the boards try to slide past each other when wind pushes the structure, when it settles, when floors rack under load. Under that sideways load, the two fasteners fail differently:

  • A nail bends. The shank deforms and keeps carrying load through the bend. The connection moves a little and stays connected.
  • A screw breaks. Screws are hardened to hold threads, which makes them brittle — loaded sideways past their limit, they snap clean instead of bending.

A structure fastened with nails yields and holds through movement. The same structure fastened with ordinary screws holds rigid until the screws start shearing off.

Screws win where the load is pull-out rather than sideways — holding a board tight against another, resisting withdrawal — which is why they're the right call for things like deck boards and cabinet installs, and nails are the right call for studs, joists, and plates.

Pro tip: "Structural screws" (the thick, gold-colored ones sold for ledgers and hardware) are engineered and rated for shear, unlike ordinary wood or deck screws. Where a plan or a hanger calls for a specific structural fastener, that rating is the whole point — a box of drywall screws is not a substitute in either direction.
