The Problem
A miter saw stand supports the saw, not the work. Cutting 16-foot decking or 20-foot PVC means either a second stand dragged along and fiddled to height, or a helper holding the far end — and a sagging tail on a long board means climbing cuts and pinched blades.
The Technique
- Mount a piece of plywood between the saw and the stand's mounting brackets, sized to stick out as a wing on each side of the saw.
- Under each wing, screw a block positioned so its top face sits one 2x-thickness — about 1½", cut to match your material exactly — below the saw's deck height.
- On site, lay any 2x on the wings so it rests on the blocks and runs out alongside the stock being cut. A pressure-treated 2x6, a KD 2x4 — whatever the job has. Its top face lands flush with the saw deck.
- Long stock now rides supported along its whole length. A 16-footer laid across a wing-supported 2x cuts flat, square, and single-handed.
Pro tip: The wings cost nothing because the outfeed rails are borrowed from the lumber pile and returned when you pack up — the only permanent parts are the plywood and two blocks that travel bolted to the saw.
