Old Masking Tape That Tears? Microwave the Roll for 20 Seconds

The Problem

A roll of good masking tape costs real money, and the moment it's out of its wrapper the clock starts: the adhesive at the exposed sides of the roll dries out, and a few months later the tape tears off in ragged strips instead of pulling free. Most rolls get thrown out at 80% full.

The Technique

1. Put the tearing roll in the microwave.
2. Run it about 20 seconds.
3. Pull tape. The warmth softens and reactivates the dried adhesive at the roll's edges, and the tape releases in full clean pulls again — effectively a new roll.

Repeat when it eventually stiffens up again; the roll keeps earning reprieves until the tape itself is gone.
