Warning: This describes work at an open, energised electrical panel. The busbars behind the cover stay live with every breaker in the panel switched off, and only the utility can make them dead. If you are not confident about what is safe to touch inside a panel, the correct version of this procedure is to call an electrician.
The Problem
A breaker isn't just a switch — it's a pair of contacts that have to separate while current is flowing through them. As they part, the current keeps jumping the widening gap for an instant, and that jump is an arc. An arc in a panel reaches around 35,000°F, hotter than the surface of the sun, and it's the mechanism behind arc-flash injuries.
The more current is flowing at the moment the contacts open, the bigger that arc. A 200-amp service main is the single worst breaker in the building to open casually, because everything the property is drawing at that moment is going through it. Plenty of people treat it as the safe default — kill the main, then go work under the house — which has it exactly backwards.
The Technique
The idea is to bring current to zero before you touch the breaker that carries the most of it.
- Get the cover open without becoming part of the circuit. The panel enclosure is bonded to ground through the ground wire and rods, so touching the cover and a breaker at once puts you between the two. Most panel covers will hold themselves open if you set them just right — that gets your other hand off the grounded metal.
- Start at the far end of the system. Find every subpanel the main feeds — a panel inside the house, one in the shop, one at the greenhouse — and work at the most distant one first.
- Turn off all the small branch-circuit breakers in that subpanel. These are the ones actually carrying loads. With them off, the feeder to that subpanel is carrying nothing.
- Now turn off that subpanel's main. It opens at zero current, so the contacts part cleanly.
- Repeat for every other subpanel, then finish at the service main. By the time you reach it, nothing downstream is drawing current, and it opens with no load behind it.
- Restore in exact reverse order — service main first, then each subpanel main, then the branch circuits.
The panel is still at full voltage the whole time. Load shedding removes current, not voltage; what it changes is what happens at the contacts when they separate.
Pro tip: The same reasoning explains why a breaker feels different to a light switch even though both interrupt a circuit. A switch is built for the current of one fixture; a service main is built for the whole building, and its contacts see the worst arc in the system. Opening it under load is inside its rating, but doing it at zero current is what makes it last, and what keeps you from standing next to a fault if a contact ever fails to open cleanly.
Safety note: Stand to the side of the panel, not square in front of it, when operating any large breaker. Insulated footwear, one hand kept off the enclosure, and dry ground are the baseline — the same electrician covers those grounding rules in detail in
