The Problem
Fixing lippage on a big stone slab — one edge sitting higher than its neighbor — means lifting a stone that can run seven feet long, adding base material underneath, and setting it back down. Done by hand, that's fingers under a slab heavy enough to crush them, and a lot of awkward shoving to move the stone around at all. Large slabs have no grip: no edge to grab, nowhere safe to hold.
The Technique
- Set the point of a hay hook under the low or high edge of the slab and lift with your legs. The hook is the handle the stone doesn't have.
- Prop the raised edge — a rubber mallet wedged underneath works — so you're not holding the weight while you work.
- Add gravel under the low side and spread it the full length of the lifted edge.
- Take the weight back on the hook, brace the slab against your knee, pull the prop, and lower the stone down.
- Tamp the slab with the rubber mallet and check the edges against the neighboring stones. Repeat until the lippage is gone.
Safety note: The whole point of the hook is keeping fingers out from under the stone — don't defeat it by reaching under to sweep gravel while the slab is only propped on a mallet handle. Lift with your legs, keep your feet clear of the drop zone, and work from the side, not the end the stone would fall toward.
