Use Your Hammer to Keep a Plywood Offcut From Snapping Off
Technique: Support Sheet-Cut Offcuts
The Problem
Ripping a full sheet of plywood alone, the trouble comes in the last foot of the cut. The offcut side has been getting heavier and less supported the whole way, and near the end it sags — either tearing the final few inches off in a splintered break, or pinching the kerf closed on the blade. With a helper you'd have someone hold the far end. Solo, you need a third hand.
The Technique
Your hammer is the third hand.
- Start the long cut as usual.
- Before you reach the final stretch, lay your hammer across the cut line near the end: head resting on top of the piece that's staying, handle reaching over the kerf and under the offcut.
- Finish the cut. The handle carries the offcut's weight, so the piece can't droop and snap off the last few inches — it stays put until you lift it away.
The head's weight on the keeper side anchors the hammer, and the handle becomes a small cantilevered shelf under the loose piece. No clamps, no repositioning, nothing extra to carry up a ladder.
Pro tip: The same idea scales up: bridge the cut with two scraps of plywood — one on top, one underneath, sandwiching the sheet across the kerf — when you need both sides of a heavy cut held level the whole way, not only at the end.
Safety note: A sagging offcut doesn't only ruin the edge — it can pinch the kerf shut on the blade and kick the saw back at you. Supporting the offcut through the end of the cut is a kickback precaution, not only a tear-out one.
