The Problem
Every stack of 2x4s holds boards that will stay straight for decades and boards that will twist into propellers by August — and they cost the same at the register. The difference is written on the end of every board, in how the growth rings run. Most people never look.
The Main Types and When to Use Them
Lumber gets cut from the log three ways, and the end grain tells you which one you're holding:
Plain sawn — rings arcing across the end
The most common cut because it's the easiest and cheapest for mills. It's also the most restless: prone to warping, twisting, and cupping, and it expands and contracts the most with humidity swings. Fine for general framing where it's nailed off on layout and buried.
Quarter sawn — rings running perpendicular to the face
Cut across the growth rings, which makes the board notably more stable and stronger in use. When one turns up in the pile, save it for where straightness matters most — king studs at openings are the classic assignment, and boards cut from near the center of the tree are the pick of the litter.
Rift sawn — rings at a consistent diagonal, uniform grain
The most stable cut with the most uniform grain — and the most expensive, because milling it wastes the most wood. You won't find much of it in a framing pile; where it matters is trim and furniture stock that has to stay dead flat.
Resources are finite and no pile is all one thing — the skill is mixing and matching: restless boards to forgiving jobs, stable boards to the spots that punish movement.
