Keep Grout an Even Colour by Waiting 24 Hours and Mixing Only What You Can Use

Wait 24 hours after tiling, or moisture still leaving the thinset rises through the fresh grout and blotches its colour. After that it is mixing discipline: only 20 to 30 minutes worth at a time, and never water added to a batch that has begun to stiffen.

Run a wet sponge across the tile face before you start grouting. The damp surface keeps grout from bonding to the tile, so the haze wipes off instead of needing to be scrubbed off.
