Set the tape to your rip width, ride a finger along the sheet's edge as a fence, hold the knife against the tape's hook, and pull both hands down the sheet — a scored line parallel to the edge, no chalk line or straightedge.
The beginner-proof sequence: shim the hinge jamb plumb and straight before anything else, then shim the latch side purely to even out the reveals — with a shim behind every hinge, and a long screw through one hinge into the framing on heavy doors.
