Sort a Pallet of Lumber by Reading the Grain Before You Build
The rings on a board's end tell you its future: curved rings straighten as they dry and bow the board, a center pith means it will crack toward the middle, and tight rings mean slower-grown, harder, more stable wood. Save the best boards for doorways and corners.
