Seat Rubber Rings
Getting tight gaskets, O-rings, and seals onto a pipe or shaft.
Orient yourself so the valve handle's on position reads as 12 o'clock. Shutting it off always swings the handle from 12 to 3 — never from 12 to 9. Knowing the direction before you put muscle into a stuck valve is what keeps you from forcing it the wrong way and breaking it.
which way to turn water valve, shut off valve stuck, ball valve direction, lever valve off position
Everyone knows a lever valve is on when the handle runs parallel with the pipe and off when it's perpendicular. What's less obvious — on a valve mounted sideways, upside down, or behind a cabinet — is which way it turns. Guess wrong on a stuck valve and you're forcing it against its stop, which is how handles snap and valve stems break.
That's the whole rule, and it holds no matter how the valve is mounted, because the clock face travels with your point of view. When a valve is stuck and needs real force, run the clock check first — then you know the direction you're allowed to lean on.
