Mix an Upholstery Stain Remover From Alcohol, Vinegar, and Dish Soap
A quarter cup rubbing alcohol, half a cup distilled white vinegar, and about an ounce of dish soap. Dip a rag, scrub the stain, and watch for the bubbling that means it's working — seats, floorboards, and seat belts.

The Problem
Car seats, carpeted floorboards, and seat belts collect stains that a wet rag won't move, and dedicated upholstery cleaners are another bottle to buy for three ingredients already in the house.
The Technique
- Mix in a bowl: 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol, 1/2 cup distilled white vinegar, and about an ounce of dish soap. Stir it together.
- Dip a clean rag in the solution and wring it partway out — damp, not dripping.
- Scrub the stain. Light foaming as you work is the sign it's active.
- Keep at it until the stain lifts, then go over the area with a clean water-damped rag to pick up residue, and let it air dry.
Works on cloth seats, floorboard carpet, and seat belt webbing alike.
Pro tip: The same mix handles fabric furniture indoors — but test any upholstery in a hidden spot first, and keep the rag damp rather than wet. Soaking a cushion creates a water ring worse than the stain.
