Paint Trim and Doors Smoother: Shield, Don't Tape, and Brush Before You Roll

Lessons from repainting a room's worth of trim: caulk and clean before paint, slide a taping knife under the shoe molding instead of taping the floor, brush a door's inset panels first and roll the flats after.

The Problem

Trim and doors are where a paint job gets graded up close: drips on the floor at the shoe molding, brush marks across door panels, and hardware with paint on its edges. Rooms of trim also mean hours of taping — most of which a couple of tool tricks can replace.

The Techniques

Lessons from color-drenching a bedroom — walls, trim, doors, and baseboards all in the same color:

  • Prep is most of the finish. Clean the baseboards and caulk the gaps before painting, and pull the door knobs rather than cutting around them.
  • Shield the floor instead of taping it. Slide a drywall taping knife under the shoe molding and paint against it, moving it along as you go. It keeps paint off the floor with none of the taping time.
  • Carry a small paint pail with a magnetic brush holder. The magnet parks your brush, a small roller fits inside, and everything travels with you — no more bending to a tray on the floor a hundred times per door.
  • On doors: brush first, then roll. Brush the inset panel details first, then roll the flat faces. The roller levels out the brushed edges and leaves a smooth finish without brush marks.
  • Same color doesn't mean same sheen. The whole room wears one color, but eggshell on the walls and satin on the doors and trim — the sheen shift keeps the surfaces readable and gives trim its durability.
Pro tip: The brush-then-roll order on doors matters because wet paint levels into wet paint. Roll while the brushed sections are still wet and the two blend; let them dry and the roller texture sits on top of visible brush ridges.
