The Problem
Every roll of flashing tape, housewrap tape, and membrane tape starts the same way: fingernails scraping at the corner of the release liner, trying to separate two layers engineered to stay together. Multiply by every piece cut on an air-sealing job and it's real minutes — a trainer in the video had used the product fifteen years before anyone showed him the fast start.
The Technique
- Cut or tear your piece of tape, liner still on.
- Fold the end of the tape sharply back over your fingertip — a hard, tight crease.
- The liner is stiffer than the tape and can't stretch around the outside of the bend — it pops loose at the crease, standing away from the adhesive.
- Grab the freed liner and peel. Works on any brand of lined tape.
Pro tip: The same fold restarts a liner that tore mid-peel — crease past the tear and the liner releases again, instead of you excavating the edge with a knife tip.
