The Problem
After brake dust, chain grease, or a paint-and-caulk afternoon, regular soap slides right off working-grime hands. The dedicated hand cleaners — orange pumice goop — work, but the tub lives in the shop, runs out, and costs real money for what it is.
The Technique
This mechanic's daily-driver hand cleaner is two kitchen staples:
- Pour a small palmful of plain granulated sugar into one hand.
- Add a squirt of dish soap on top.
- Work the mix over both hands dry-ish at first — knuckles, cuticles, around the nails — letting the sugar scour while the soap emulsifies the grease.
- Add a little water, keep scrubbing, then rinse.
The mechanism is the same as the commercial goop: an abrasive to break the grime's grip plus a surfactant to carry the oil away. Sugar's crystals are hard enough to scrub but dissolve as you rinse, so there's no grit left in the sink — and no pumice tub to buy.
Pro tip: It's still an abrasive scrub — skip it on cracked or broken skin, and follow with hand lotion if you're doing this daily, same as you would with any shop hand cleaner. Coffee grounds and sawdust work as the abrasive in a pinch; sugar rinses away cleanest.
