Flush a Proud Framing Member
Levering a header or joist flush with a temporary nail as the fulcrum for the hammer claw.
Nail a 14½-inch spacer centered on a 16-inch backer and you have a block that sets every stud at 16-on-center by feel — hook it over the last stud, butt the next one, nail, move on. No tape, no marking, and it holds the stud square and flush to the plates.
stud layout jig, 16 oc spacer, keep studs evenly spaced, framing without a tape measure
Framing a wall the textbook way means laying out both plates first — hooking the tape, marking every 16 inches, squaring lines, X-ing the stud side — and doing it again for every wall. Solo, it's the slowest part of the job, and a misread tape puts a stud off-layout where the sheathing edge will land on air.
