Keep One Box for Every Leftover Fastener in the House
Flat-pack furniture, appliances, and fixtures all ship spare hardware, and it ends up in a different drawer every time. One labelled bin for all of it turns a hunt into a single place to look.

The Problem
A flat-pack wardrobe leaves behind two cam locks, a hex key, and four screws you didn't need. The same thing happens with a patio set, a crib, a TV stand, and the feet that came taped inside an appliance.
Each set goes somewhere different — a kitchen drawer, the original carton, a shelf in the garage. Eighteen months later a shelf pin shears and the replacement is somewhere in the house, in a place chosen by whoever unpacked the box.
The Technique
- Get one bin with a lid. Label it.
- Every time something is assembled or installed, the leftover hardware goes in it before the packaging is thrown out. Screws, bolts, cam locks, hex keys, shelf pins, feet, touch-up paint, the spare tile.
- Bag and label anything that's obviously specific to one item — the hex key that only fits one brand's cam bolts is worth naming.
- When something works loose or breaks, you check one place.
Pro tip: Keep a second box for parts belonging to things that are fixed in place — the spare blind brackets, the extra deck screws, the offcut of worktop. Those get looked for under different circumstances than furniture hardware, and mixing them means sorting through one to find the other.
Pro tip: Put the assembly manuals in the same box. The exploded diagram is what tells you which of the four similar screws is the right one, and it's the thing most likely to have been recycled with the carton.
