Hang Drywall Solo With a Foot-Operated Lift

The Problem
Hanging a wall sheet alone means getting it into final position — tight to the sheet above it, or up off the floor to its layout line — and holding it there while you reach for the screw gun. Without a second person, that usually looks like balancing the sheet on a knee, pinning it with a shoulder, and hoping it doesn't drift while the first screws go in.
The Technique
A drywall foot lift (also sold as a board lifter) is a small rocker that solves the third-hand problem:
- Stand the sheet roughly in place against the framing.
- Slip the lift's plate under the sheet's bottom edge, near the middle.
- Step down on the pedal end. The rocker levers the sheet up — snug against the sheet above, or to your line — and fine foot pressure adjusts the height in small increments.
- With your foot holding the sheet, both hands are free to set it side to side and drive the first screws.
- Once the sheet is fastened, ease off and slide the lift out.
The same lift raises other sheet material — plywood, paneling, even a door slab being fit to its hinges.
Pro tip: The tool is a plain lever, and a lift is cheap enough that there's no reason to fight a sheet one-handed. If you hang more than a room or two a year it pays for itself in un-stripped screws and sheets that land on layout the first time.
