The Problem
The standard drywall cut is score the face, snap it back, then reach around — or flip the sheet — to run the knife through the back paper before the piece comes free. That second cut is the awkward one: you're working blind behind the sheet or wrestling a half-snapped board around, and it's where the cut wanders.
The Technique
- Mark your line and score the face paper once with a utility knife.
- Snap the sheet back away from the score, folding it on the scored line as usual.
- Now — instead of cutting the back paper — snap the sheet back the other way, toward you.
- The back paper breaks along the fold line and the piece comes free. No second score, no reaching around the sheet.
Pro tip: The clean break depends on a committed first snap that creases the back paper sharply on the line — a timid snap leaves the paper unfolded and the reverse snap will tear instead of break.
