Build a PVC Drip Line for a Garden Row — an Hour and Under $50 for 60 Feet

Soaker hoses die of pressure and dry spots. Schedule-40 PVC with a 1/16-inch hole drilled every six inches — all on the pipe's printed writing line so the holes aim the same way — glues up into a drip line that waters at the roots, row after row, year after year.

The Problem

Soaker hoses cost real money, demand a narrow pressure window, and still deliver dry spots — and some crops, berries especially, want water at the root, not sprayed over the top. Two seasons of that and building your own becomes the reasonable option.

The Technique

  1. Mark a 10-foot length of ¾" schedule-40 PVC every six inches — then use that first pipe as the marking pattern for all the others.
  2. Put every mark on the pipe's printed writing line. That's the registration trick: the factory printing runs dead straight down one side, so holes drilled on the writing all point the same direction, and any two pipes lined up writing-to-writing have their holes aligned.
  3. Drill a 1/16" hole at every mark.
  4. Glue up the runs: purple primer on both parts, then cement, push together with a quarter twist — and at every joint, line up the writing on both pieces before the glue grabs.
  5. Assemble into sections you can carry (he built three 20-foot sections), thread them into the planting, and join them in place. Cap the far end.
  6. At the supply end, glue on a 90-degree elbow with a short stub and a garden-hose adapter fitting. Connect the hose, turn it on, and every hole drips at the roots.

Total bill: pipe, two unions, one elbow, one cap, one hose adapter, primer and cement — under $50 for a 60-foot run, built in an hour on camera.

Pro tip: Holes up or holes down is a real choice — down waters the roots directly but can drill mud divots at pressure; up gives a gentler bubble-over. Either way, the writing-line trick is what keeps the choice consistent for the whole run instead of random per pipe.
