Replace a Crushed Dryer Vent Hookup With a Magnetic Duct Connection
The Problem
The flexible duct behind a dryer is a part designed to fail. It kinks when the dryer slides back, crushes against the wall, and traps lint in every corrugation — restricting airflow, stretching drying times, and building the fuel for a dryer fire. And because hooking it up means blind-clamping a floppy tube in a gap you can't see into, most people shove the dryer back and hope.
The Technique
Rebuild the connection so it couples itself.
- Pull out the failing flex duct and replace the run with rigid duct.
- Offset the duct from the wall so its open end faces the dryer's outlet at matching height — the two ends should line up face-to-face where the dryer will sit.
- Install a magnetic duct connector: one half on the dryer's outlet duct, the mating half on the wall-side duct.
- Slide the dryer back. The magnets find each other and snap the joint closed, aligned and sealed — no reaching behind, no clamps, no crushed hose.
When it's time to clean the duct or pull the dryer, tug it forward and the coupling releases.
Pro tip: The magnetic joint fixes the maintenance problem as much as the installation one — a connection that costs nothing to open is one that actually gets opened for lint cleaning, instead of skipped for five years because the hookup was such a fight.
Safety note: Dryer ducting is a fire-safety system. Use metal duct — never vinyl or plastic flex — keep joints sealed with foil tape rather than screws (screw points snag lint inside the duct), and clean the full run periodically no matter how good the connection is.
