Flatten Veneer Bubbles With a Pinhole and a Hot Iron
Poke a small hole in the raised bubble with a utility knife, then iron it down — the heat reactivates the veneer glue underneath and the pinhole lets trapped air escape. Never sand a raised bubble; you'll blow through the veneer.

The Problem
Veneered furniture that's seen moisture grows bubbles — spots where the thin face layer has let go of the substrate and lifted. The instinct on a flip project is to sand the surface flat, and that instinct ruins the piece: veneer is paper-thin, and sanding a raised bubble grinds through the face into the substrate before the bubble ever levels out.
The Technique
- With a utility knife, gently poke a small hole in the bubble. This is the escape route for the air trapped underneath — without it, ironing pushes the bubble around instead of down.
- Set a clothes iron on the bubble and press it down. The heat reactivates the original veneer glue beneath the face.
- Hold pressure as it cools so the veneer beds back into the softened glue instead of lifting again.
- Once it's down and cool, the surface can be sanded and finished like the rest of the piece.
