Screw Blocks to a Drywall Sheet to Hook It in Place Overhead

The Problem
Hanging a sheet of drywall on a ceiling alone is the worst part of the job. A full sheet is heavy and floppy, and you need both hands to hold it flat against the joists — which leaves no hands for the drill. Without a drywall lift or a helper, you end up pinning it with your head while fumbling for a screw.
The Technique
The fix is to give the sheet something to hang on so it holds itself while you fasten it.
- Screw a couple of small wood blocks to the end of the drywall sheet so they stand proud of the edge, forming a lip.
- Lift the sheet up overhead and into position.
- Hook that lip over the edge it needs to catch — the wall's top plate or the edge of the sheet already hung — so the blocks carry the weight and hold the end up.
- With the sheet supported, push the rest flat to the joists and drive your screws.
- Back the blocks out and fill the couple of screw holes with the rest of your finishing.
Pro tip: Put the blocks where the screw holes will be covered or easily mudded, and use screws just long enough to hold — a screw driven too deep blows through the paper face and weakens the spot you'll need to finish.
Safety note: A full sheet of 1/2" drywall runs over 50 lbs and it's going above your head. Work from a stable platform rather than a ladder if you can, and don't rely on the blocks alone to hold a sheet you couldn't otherwise control.
