Fix Peeling Paint Edges With Flexible Filler Instead of Stripping the Wall

The Problem
A patch of peeling paint leaves a cliff: everywhere the old coat let go, there's a raised lip of sound paint around the bare spot. Paint over it as-is and the ridge telegraphs through every coat. The textbook fix — strip or sand the whole wall flat — is a day's work for what started as a palm-sized flake.
The Technique
Treat the edge, not the wall.
- Scrape back all the peeling paint until everything left on the wall is stuck fast.
- Run a flexible filler-caulk (the decorator's caulk-filler hybrid sold in a cartridge) around the lip — right along the edge where the remaining paint stands proud of the bare patch.
- Flatten it immediately with a scraper, feathering the filler so the step disappears into a smooth ramp.
- No sanding needed — once it's dry, paint straight over the top.
The flake becomes a ten-minute repair instead of a wall-stripping weekend.
Pro tip: The cartridge filler works here where powder filler struggles because it's flexible and thin-spreading — it wants to feather to nothing at the edges, which is exactly the shape this repair needs. Just keep the coats of paint light over it at first; flexible fillers skin fast but cure slower than they look.
