A Pop-Up Tent and a Box-Fan Filter Make a DIY Spray Booth
For dust-free spraying of doors, cabinets, and small pieces, set up a pop-up canopy tent in the garage and pull overspray through a homemade filter — a box fan faced with furnace filters. Wear a respirator.

The Problem
Spraying cabinet doors, trim, or small furniture gives a far smoother finish than brushing, but it needs a clean, contained space. Spray in the open garage and dust and bugs settle into the wet finish; overspray drifts onto everything nearby and hangs in the air you're breathing. A real spray booth costs more than most home projects justify.
The Technique
The idea is a cheap pop-up canopy tent — the kind sold at warehouse and big-box stores — set up inside the garage, with a homemade filter to pull overspray out of the air.
- Set up the tent in the garage to enclose your work and keep dust off the finish.
- Build the air filter: stand a box fan up and tape furnace filters (the pleated forced-air type) across the intake side — four filters cover the whole face of a standard fan.
- Run the fan so it draws the air — and the suspended overspray — through the filters, keeping the fog down while you work.
- Hang or stand your pieces inside, and spray.
Pro tip: Position the fan so it pulls air past your work and out, with a cracked door or window giving makeup air a path in. You want airflow moving overspray away from you and toward the filter, not swirling it back into the finish.
Safety note: Always wear a proper respirator — not a dust mask — when spraying in an enclosed tent; paint fumes build up fast in a small space and can cause everything from headaches to loss of consciousness. Just as important: a standard box fan motor is not spark-proof, and solvent vapors are flammable. Reserve this setup for water-based finishes, keep the space well ventilated with fresh air coming in, and never spray solvent-based or lacquer products where the fumes pass through a running box-fan motor.
