Cut Wall Blocking to Length in Place Using the Saw's Shoe as the Gauge
Hold the block across the stud bay, press the edge of your circular saw's shoe against the stud, and plunge-cut — on most saws the shoe-to-blade distance is exactly 1-1/2 inches, so the cut lands flush and the block drops in without measuring.

The Problem
Cutting blocking for a wall means a separate measurement for nearly every bay — stud spacing is never perfectly consistent, so one "16 on center" number cut twenty times produces blocks that rattle in some bays and need persuading into others. Measure, walk to the saw, cut, walk back, test, repeat: it's the slowest part of the job.
The Technique
Skip the tape entirely and let the saw index the cut off the stud itself.
- Hold your blocking stock across the bay, pressed flush against the stud on one side.
- At the other stud, set the circular saw on the block and slide it over until the side edge of the shoe is pressed right against that stud.
- Plunge-cut straight down through the block, keeping the shoe edge riding the stud.
- Drop the block in. On most circular saws, the distance from the side of the shoe to the blade is exactly 1-1/2 inches — the thickness of framing lumber — so a cut indexed off the stud face lands precisely where the block meets it.
No measuring, no walking, and each block is cut to its own bay, so the slightly-off spacing that ruins batch-cut blocking doesn't matter.
Pro tip: That 1-1/2 inch shoe-to-blade offset is a design choice, not a coincidence — it's there for conventional inch-and-a-half framing material. Verify yours once on a scrap before trusting it; a saw that measures 1-9/16 will tell you immediately, and you can shim your reference or mark the shoe.
Safety note: Plunge-cutting a circular saw invites kickback if it's done casually. Retract the guard deliberately, rest the front of the shoe on the work before the blade touches, lower the spinning blade in slowly, and keep both hands on the saw — never plunge with the blade already buried or the saw resting on the guard.
