Clean a Bathroom Exhaust Fan in About Ten Minutes
A bathroom fan clogged with dust and grime moves less air and runs louder. Drop the cover, unplug and unscrew the fan unit, vacuum both halves, and reassemble.

The Problem
A bathroom exhaust fan pulls in grease, dust, and grime every time it runs, and it all builds up on the blades and housing. Over time the fan moves less air, runs noticeably louder, and stops clearing humidity and odor the way it should. Most people never touch it — but it's a ten-minute job once you know it comes apart.
The Technique
- Cut the power. Turn off the breaker for the bathroom, and unplug the unit once you reach it. Don't rely on the wall switch alone.
- Remove the cover panel. It's usually held by two spring clips — pinch them inward and the cover drops, hanging by the clips.
- Unplug the fan motor. Look for a short cord plugged into a receptacle built into the housing, and pull it free.
- Remove the screw holding the fan unit in place — usually just one. Keep a hand under it so the motor doesn't drop on you as the screw comes out.
- Vacuum both the fan unit and the ceiling housing, clearing dust off the blades and out of the box.
- Reverse the steps to reassemble: motor back in, screw set, cord plugged in, cover clipped on. Restore power and test.
Pro tip: A quick maintenance cycle every six months or so keeps it from ever getting bad. If the blades are greasy rather than just dusty, wipe them with a damp cloth and let them dry fully before reassembling.
Safety note: This is an electrical fixture wired into the ceiling. Confirm the power is off at the breaker before unplugging or unscrewing anything, and never run the motor while it's out of the housing.
