Rub Out Wood Floor and Furniture Scratches With a Walnut

The Problem

Moving furniture finds every unprotected corner of a wood floor. A scratch through the finish exposes raw, pale fibers that catch the light and read from across the room — and on a floor you love, the choice seems to be living with it or calling a refinisher over what took two seconds to inflict.

The Technique

Before anything drastic, try a walnut.

1. Take a shelled raw walnut and rub the meat directly along the scratch, working with the direction of the mark. Real pressure, several passes — you're warming the nut's oils into the exposed wood fibers.
2. Let it sit a few minutes so the oil penetrates.
3. Buff along the scratch with a soft cloth to blend and pick up the residue, then clean the area normally.

The oil darkens the pale exposed fibers back toward the surrounding tone, and the fine nut particles help fill the groove. On light scratches the mark can disappear outright — and the creator's test case was worse than that: genuine gouges in a vintage worn-oak parquet, visibly rescued.
