The Problem
Before a tree comes down, one question decides everything: how tall is it, and does that height reach the house, the fence, the power line? Eyeballing tree height fails consistently — people underestimate tall trees badly, and "I think it clears" is a terrible basis for an irreversible cut.
The Technique
A torpedo level with a 45-degree vial turns the question into a right triangle:
- Stand back from the tree and aim the level up along its length toward the treetop, like a sighting stick.
- Check the 45° vial. Bubble not centered — walk forward or back and sight again.
- When the bubble centers while the level points at the top, your line of sight is at exactly 45 degrees — which means your horizontal distance to the trunk equals the tree's height above your eye line.
- Mark where you're standing — and correct for your eye height: holding the level six feet up means the true fall reach extends about six feet behind your mark.
- Measure or pace from the trunk to the mark. That's the height, and — felled in your direction — the far edge of where the top lands.
This creator's mark came within a foot of where the felled top actually landed.
Pro tip: Do the sighting on the line you plan to fell along, since ground slope changes the answer — measuring across a slope understates the reach downhill. Then add margin: tops whip, limbs launch, and a tree that "exactly reaches" the target is a tree that hits it.
Safety note: This measures where a tree could reach — it doesn't make the felling safe. Lean, wind, rot, and hung limbs decide where a tree actually goes. If the fall zone includes anything you can't afford to hit — structures, lines, roads — that's a job for a professional with rigging, not a homeowner with a chainsaw and a level.
