Build a Tiled Access Hatch So a Wall-Hung Toilet Stays Serviceable
Technique: Tiled Access Hatches
The Problem
A wall-hung (floating) toilet puts the cistern, the flush valve, and the supply connections inside the wall. Tile over the frame and every future failure — a running flush, a weeping connection — starts with demolition of a finished tiled wall.
The Technique
- Before tiling, frame an opening in the toilet wall sized to reach the cistern internals and pipe connections.
- Build a hatch panel to fit the opening, and face it with the same tiles as the wall — cut and laid so the joints line up with the surrounding field. Matched joints are what make the hatch disappear.
- Mount the panel on clip-style fixings so it pulls off without tools and snaps back flush.
Done well, the wall reads as continuous tile, and the whole service side of the toilet is reachable in seconds for as long as the bathroom lives. The reel shows the finished hatch coming off and going back on.
Pro tip: The same thinking applies to any concealed system — shower valves, whirlpool pumps, shut-offs. If it can fail or need adjustment, build the access before the finish goes on.
