Technique: Tape a Drop Cloth Standing Up
The Problem
A drop cloth that isn't fixed down travels. It rucks up under a ladder, catches on a foot, and slides away from the skirting exactly where the paint is most likely to land.
Taping the edge means working along the floor on your knees, and the length of a room is a lot of floor. It's the step most likely to get skipped for a job that's only going to take twenty minutes.
The Technique
The roller frame becomes the applicator.
- Take the cover off the roller frame and slide a roll of painter's tape onto the frame's arm, then put the cover back on. The roll spins on the arm.
- Pull out a foot or so of tape and stick the end over the roller cover, adhesive side out.
- Set the roller on the edge of the drop cloth where it meets the floor.
- Push the roller along the edge. The tape feeds off the roll, and the cover presses it down onto the cloth and the floor as it goes.
- Tear off at the end of the run.
You've taped the length of a wall standing up.
Pro tip: This is a hold-it-down technique, not a mask-it-off one. The tape lands close to the line you're aiming for rather than on it, so use it where the job is stopping the cloth from moving. Anywhere the tape edge is going to define a paint line — skirting, door casing, trim — is still a job for hands and eyes at floor level.
Pro tip: Use an extension pole on the frame and the whole thing works standing fully upright, which is the point. The roller only needs enough downward pressure to bed the tape.
