The Problem

Most beginning woodworkers run whatever blade came on the saw for every cut — ripping 8/4 hardwood, crosscutting trim, breaking down plywood — and then blame the saw when the plywood edge shreds, the maple burns, and the blade feels dull after a month. The blade isn't defective. It's being asked to do three different jobs, and tooth count is what decides which job a blade is good at.

The Main Types and When to Use Them

Rip blades (24–30 teeth)

For cutting solid wood along the grain. Fewer teeth means each tooth takes a bigger bite, and the deep gullets between them clear sawdust fast — which is what lets thick or dense stock feed smoothly instead of burning. If you rip a lot of hardwood, this blade earns its keep fastest.

Combination blades (40–50 teeth)

The compromise blade that lives on most saws, and reasonably so: acceptable rips, acceptable crosscuts, no blade changes. If you only own one good blade, make it this — but know that both extremes (thick rips, veneered plywood) are where it falls short.

Fine-finish and plywood blades (60–80 teeth)

For crosscuts that show, and above all for plywood and other veneered sheet goods, where a coarse blade lifts and shreds the face veneer. More teeth means each tooth takes a smaller bite, so the surface comes out clean — at the cost of slower feed and faster heat buildup if you push it through thick solid stock. The creator keeps an 80-tooth thin-kerf blade for plywood, which is a standard choice.

The pattern behind all three: big bites for bulk material along the grain, small bites for delicate faces. And thin-kerf versions of any of these are worth considering on a lower-powered saw — less material removed per cut means less motor to remove it.

Pro tip: Before declaring a blade dull, clean it. Pitch and resin baked onto the teeth cause burning and rough cuts that read exactly like dullness, and a soak in blade cleaner brings back more blades than the sharpening service does.
