Start Angled Screws in Reverse So They Never Slip or Split
Technique: Reverse-Starting Toe Screws
The Problem
Driving a screw at an angle is a fight with physics: the tip has nothing square to bite, so it skates down the board before the threads catch — and when it finally does grab near an edge, the wedge action splits the lumber. Everyone's chased a toe-screw across a workpiece and everyone's cracked a board doing it.
The Technique
- Touch the screw to the wood where you want it and pull the trigger in reverse — the tip spins without biting, burnishing a little starting dimple instead of wandering.
- Still running in reverse, tilt the screw over to the angle you actually want. The dimple holds the tip in place while you set the angle.
- Flip the driver to forward and drive. The screw starts exactly where you placed it, at exactly the angle you set — no slipping, no splitting, every time.
Pro tip: The reverse spin is doing two favors at once — it keeps the tip stationary while you aim, and it pre-polishes the entry so the threads engage gradually instead of wedging in all at once, which is what splits boards near their ends. It's the same idea as a pilot hole, for free, in two seconds.
