Technique: Insulation-Grip Wire Twisting
The Problem
Twisting stranded conductors — one cable or several together — is fiddlier than it should be. Bare strands fray and flare at the tip, you keep re-grabbing them to gather the strays, and by the end of a job the little copper offcuts are ground into the carpet through the whole site.
The Technique
Strip the insulation, but don't take it off yet.
- Cut the insulation where you normally would, but leave the freed slug sitting on the end of the strands instead of pulling it clear.
- Grab that insulation slug and use it as your handle while you twist — the single cable, or several conductors together. It keeps all the strands gathered so nothing frays or flares while you work.
- When the twist is done, slide the slug off. Cleanup is the slug itself — one piece of insulation in your pocket, not a scatter of copper fragments through the house.
Pro tip: The cleanup half of this is worth as much as the grip half. Copper shrapnel in a finished home's carpet is the kind of thing a client finds with bare feet weeks later — a habit that captures the waste at the point it's made beats any amount of sweeping.
