Technique: Stay-In-Place Drainage Footing Forms
The Problem
Conventional footing forms are dimensional lumber that gets set, poured against, then torn apart and stripped — labor spent building something whose destiny is the scrap pile. And after all that, the footing still needs a separate perimeter drain installed beside it, at the right height, which is its own job.
The Technique
Stay-in-place drainage forms (Form-A-Drain is the product shown) replace the lumber and become the drain:
- Read the profile: each length is slotted on one side, smooth on the other. The smooth side faces the pour and holds the concrete; the slotted side faces away and admits water into the hollow core, which is a continuous channel.
- Assemble the perimeter with the system's 45- and 90-degree corners and couplings for joining lengths.
- Set it level: check heights with a laser level and screw the forms to stakes to hold position.
- Hook the spacer straps — hooked on both ends — across the two form lines so the concrete's weight can't spread them apart during the pour.
- Pour, and walk away from stripping. The forms stay in place, leaving a perfectly level perimeter drainage system wrapped around the footing.
- Add outlets where you want them: cut a hole with a hole saw and snap in an outlet adapter. In this build — one adapter low on the outside feeding a 4-inch drain tile run to daylight, carrying water away; one at the top on the inside connected up to a radon vent, making the form part of the radon mitigation system too.
Pro tip: The level-check matters twice here — a wood form that's a bit off gets forgiven when it's stripped, but this form IS the drain forever, so the laser work at setup is buying you a perimeter drain with perfect, consistent fall for the life of the house.
Safety note: Footings are engineered and inspected — form dimensions, depths, and drain-to-daylight or sump connections need to match your approved plans and local code, and the radon tie-in should follow your jurisdiction's mitigation requirements. This is a technique to bring to your foundation plan, not to improvise past it.
