Technique: Draining a P-Trap Without a Bucket
A P-trap always holds water — that's its job — so the moment you crack it loose during a sink swap, that cupful goes somewhere. Usually it's the cabinet floor, or your sleeve, because there's never a bucket that fits under a trap that sits two inches off the cabinet bottom.
If the sink is already out and the trap is still attached to the stub coming out of the wall, you can pour the water down the drain it's already connected to.
The swing one way, rotate the other sequence is what makes it work: it tips the trap's belly toward the outlet so the water only ever has one place to go.
