Spray to Natural Breaks to Avoid Lap Marks on a House Exterior

The Problem

When you spray a large surface like a house exterior with an airless sprayer, stopping in the middle of an open wall and restarting leaves a lap mark — an overlapped band that's invisible while the paint is wet. The trouble shows up months later: the doubled-up area weathers differently and the line becomes visible. By then the only fix is repainting.

The Technique

The rule is simple: never stop your spray in the middle of an open field. Break the wall into sections you can each cover in one continuous pass, and put your stopping points on features where a slight overlap won't show.

1. Plan your sections around natural breaks — a corner, a downspout or conduit, the edge of a window or door. Start and stop only at these lines.
2. Spray each section in one go, keeping a wet edge the whole way.
3. Pause only when you reach a natural break, so any overlap lands on a feature rather than open siding.
4. Up high, if a section is too big to finish from one ladder position before the edge dries, set multiple ladders or move fast to keep the wet edge alive. This is the hard part on a second story.
