Cut a Mortise and Tenon That Fits by Sizing the Tenon to the Stock, Then the Joint to the Mortise
A tenon is about a third of the stock's thickness and roughly two thirds of that width deep. Cut the mortise first and fit the tenon to it — the reverse order is what makes the joint sloppy.
